Self-Assessment

Welcome to my page! have fun reading about my journey in this class and reading some of the few assignments conducted during this course. Happy reading everyone!

My intentions when applying for this writing class was to be able to write about anything with no problem. It was hard being creative when there was no room for that. Usually, in high school writing be this harsh process of emptying words onto a piece of paper and submitting it in exchange for a dry letter grade. A letter grade determining not how well of a creative writer you are but if you followed the list of rules correctly. Going into college my perspectives on writing had completely transformed. It allowed me to create a safe space within myself because I am not a big fan of discussing my issues. So, having a journal was my first step in connecting with myself. Initially at the start this semester I was ready to tackle any creative assignments that were going to take me out of my comfort zone and expand on the limitless ideas I could write about. It is now at the end of the semester and I could not be prouder of the work that was produced into this writing class. With each writing assignment I gave it my all and more and I am greatly satisfied with the results. This course allows you to think outside the box and freely express yourself in a welcoming environment. Professor Sam does an amazing job of making everyone feel equal and free of judgment when they are sharing their answers. The students in the classroom come from different ethnic backgrounds, beliefs, and unique interpretations of one thing. It broadened thinking and expanding on your own opinions to a whole new level.  She allowed us to have fun be creative, yet all the work produced in class was essential to understand the frameworks of society. She gave us freedom of choice and that allowed us, writers, to blossom in the way that we wanted to.

In this course, we have had a total of four major writing assignments. We regularly had responses on blackboard posts as well which was the topic of discussion for the following class. I enjoyed writing the art review piece because it was the first assignment in which I had the ability to choose any art piece I wanted and do my own analysis on it. At first, I was worried that I would not be good enough because their certain aspects of analysis you must coherently follow for it to be a successful piece. I chose to talk about a successful track on an album conducted by an artist called J Cole. It was a difficult task for me at first because creative writing was new to me. I had read a bunch of art reviews for reference, but I seemed to struggle when it came to claiming my voice. What did I want to say on paper and how will I get my message across as clearly as I can? Rereading my art review, I lacked a lot of concrete information. I had stated everything about the piece correctly, but when it came to interpreting it and breaking down the pieces that were quite difficult and it showed. The second assignment was the short review assignment. In which we were asked to analyze something we like in a bad or negative manner and vise versa with something that we enjoyed. This assignment was a stretch for me because it was unlike anything I was ever used to. This was the first assignment that really allowed me to be creative and free. Where do I even start, I thought. I decided to write about do not fuck with cats a documentary series I really enjoyed and the movie the marriage story in which I did not enjoy as much. Reading what I wrote after I was surprised that I had taught myself new meanings writing them out than I had when watching both films. The third writing assignment was the rhetorical analysis op-ed piece. It was the first assignment in which we had to use real concrete evidence use that to back up a claim we wanted to make. It could be anything we wanted, and that part was the most challenging. There were so many topics I wanted to discuss about but then I chose to write about our messed-up education system. I was passionate when writing this piece because it is something I strongly stood by and wanted to share with the rest of the class. Which led into the fourth assignment which was a visual essay on the same subject we discussed in the following paper. I had never done a visual essay but after seeing all the examples professors sent, I was more comfortable in creating my own even though it was the first time. It came down to creativity and how can I get the same message across using images. Which seemed easy at first but conducting the right images can be a headache. It was a success and I was proud of what it turned out to be. For the final assignment the conference paper, I had the most fun. This was the paper that highlighted my growth as a writer. You can tell with language in this essay that I have become more comfortable finding my voice and expressing it as a thesis statement. I chose to connect some important underlining themes with the film on Netflix called the platform to the way society has been dealing with the consequences of COVID-19. It was a lengthy paper, but it did not feel that way because I was passionate to write about it. I wanted to get my message across because I wanted the public to be as informed about what is going on. It was a paper about reality and that made it an emotional piece.

Overall, my growth in this class has become an essential part of helping myself connect with my thoughts and guiding me on the right path to find my voice. It has created space for me to speak about anything I want to, with no judgment. The different assignments each played a different role in expanding my limits as a writer. I have no regrets in the work that I have created in this course. I will continue to fall in love with writing and hopefully, someday I will look back at this profile and have grown even greater as a writer.
